Background

Space Hub Sutherland was the first UK spaceport site to win planning permission, breaking ground on the A'Mhoine peninsula in May 2023. It was designed to be run by Orbex, launching the Orbex Prime rocket. In November 2024, Orbex redirected its first Prime launch to SaxaVord instead, effectively pausing construction at Sutherland. Orbex entered administration in February 2026 after a funding round fell through, and its subsidiary, Sutherland Spaceport Ltd, was placed into liquidation in June 2026 as part of a sale of the company's assets. The site's lease is among the assets being sold; Skyrora is reported to have expressed interest in acquiring it.
