The next UK rocket launch depends on the current manifest from SaxaVord in Shetland. We update our homepage countdown whenever a precise date is published. Many UK launches are still listed as NET windows, so dates can shift by weeks or months as operators complete integration and secure range approvals.
SaxaVord Spaceport is on Unst, the northernmost of the inhabited Shetland Islands. For the current window (10 August to early September 2026), attempts are only made on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 4pm and 8pm local time, with a go/no-go decision taken 24 hours in advance. On confirmed attempt days a launch exclusion zone applies around the spaceport and to the north of Unst. SaxaVord runs an authorised viewing area with limited passes, offered first to Unst residents and then to people from outside the island. NET stands for "No Earlier Than". It is a scheduling shorthand used when a launch date is not yet confirmed. A NET of August 2026 means the flight could happen any time from that month onwards, but it may slip if technical checks, weather, or regulatory approvals take longer than planned.
Launches slip for many reasons: a vehicle may need extra hardware checks, the payload might require additional testing, or the range may close due to poor weather or conflicting air and sea traffic. Safety is always prioritised over schedule, so operators would rather delay than launch into unfavourable conditions.
A vertical launch lifts straight off a pad, like a traditional rocket. A horizontal launch uses a carrier aircraft that takes off from a runway and releases a small rocket at altitude. SaxaVord are vertical spaceports, while Cornwall Spaceport at Newquay is designed for horizontal launch via modified aircraft.
The first vehicles expected from UK spaceports include RFA One, Skyrora XL, HyImpulse SL1 and Spaceport Cornwall's carrier-led launch system. Each is sized for small satellites and is making its maiden flight from UK soil, so schedules remain tentative until flight-readiness reviews are complete.
A launch window is the period during which a rocket must lift off to reach the correct orbit. It can be as short as a few seconds for missions that must align with another spacecraft, or several hours for less demanding trajectories. Missing the window usually means waiting until the next favourable opportunity.
Scotland's northern coastlines offer clear, unpopulated flight paths over the North Atlantic and into polar or sun-synchronous orbits, which are ideal for Earth-observation satellites. England lacks similarly safe, sparsely populated corridors for vertical launch, although Cornwall supports horizontal launch from an existing airport runway.
A payload fairing is the protective nose cone that surrounds satellites during ascent. It shields the payload from aerodynamic forces, heating, and acoustic vibration. Once the rocket is above most of the atmosphere, the fairing splits in half and falls away, allowing the satellite to separate cleanly into orbit.
A sun-synchronous orbit is a type of low Earth orbit that passes over any given point at roughly the same local solar time each day. This consistency is valuable for Earth-observation satellites because it keeps lighting conditions uniform across images taken weeks or months apart.
Before every launch, operators and the UK Civil Aviation Authority define a corridor that the rocket must follow. Ships and aircraft are cleared from the area, and ground-based range safety officers can command the vehicle to self-destruct if it deviates from the approved path. These measures protect populated areas and shipping lanes.
Some spaceports run occasional open days, school visits, and media events, but active launch sites are not generally open to casual visitors for safety and security reasons. The best way to experience a launch is through an organised viewing event or by following the livestream on launch day.
