Background
Spaceport 1 won planning permission in 2023 despite significant local opposition, including a petition against it signed by almost 1,000 people. Construction of enabling infrastructure – access tracks, parking, and fibre connectivity – began in November 2024, led by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council). The UK Civil Aviation Authority granted airspace approval in December 2025. The site is designed as a low-impact, multi-customer sub-orbital vertical launch facility capable of up to ten launches a year; a private-sector operator for day-to-day running has not yet been confirmed.
