Background
Backed by an £80 million Ayrshire Growth Deal allocation, Prestwick Spaceport was led by South Ayrshire Council and Glasgow Prestwick Airport as a horizontal 'air launch' site, partnered with launch provider Astraius from 2021 and Spirit AeroSystems from 2023. Despite years of planning, the project never obtained a CAA spaceport operator licence and no launch hardware arrived on site. Local reporting in October 2025 described the council as having informally shelved the project in 2024, as the UK launch market shifted towards vertical sites like SaxaVord.
